The issues of energy supply and the extraction of natural resources - the technological foundation of modern societies - are increasingly coming to the attention of people in the urban centres of industrialised nations - even where these processes are often invisible and inaudible.

Man-made climate change has brought the consequences of raw material extraction and consumption to the forefront of people's minds and with them the need to think about alternatives to extractive capitalism. More and more people are reflecting on the effects of the system of growth and, moreover, no longer seem indifferent to the destructive interventions in the landscape.

The artistic field recording focussed project Land. Schafft. Sound. has commissioned Patrick Franke to create a 4-channel composition on the subject of open-cast mining and post-mining landscapes. Franke has lived in a region characterised by coal mines for over 20 years and is therefore directly connected to this topic. He has carried out ecological and biological studies in these disrupted habitats but has collected hundreds of field recordings there as well. He has documented the changes in the areas characterised by extraction - and thus major upheavals - both in terms of field biology and sound.

Profen Extract is the result of a review of these developments and also a reflection on a transformed future, a future that is based on the use of renewable energies, but whose expansion, as with the extraction system, has so far also been characterised by excess, destruction of nature and social injustice.

Profen Extract consists of layers of unprocessed field recordings from open-cast mines, recultivated open-cast mines, areas approved for future extraction and wind power plants.
